It's been 133 years since the Specters invaded Earth. Like ghosts they haunt the planet, devouring anyone foolish enough to venture outside the last remaining protected cities. For some, venturing out isn't a choice--it's a necessary evil to prove yourself to your clan as you come of age.
But when a team of ambitious youth—New Adults—undertakes a mission deep in Specter territory, they discover a terrible secret. Everything they've learned may be wrong ... and Earth is in grave danger.

Interview

What is the hardest part of writing your books?
Probably the second draft. It’s always the draft where I try to insert a bunch of ideas that came to me after the first draft was done. But then of course I also need to make sure those ideas make sense … it gets a little frustrating! Then as each draft starts to make sense and the book feels better and better, it can also get kind of difficult trudging through such familiar territory over and over. That’s why a fresh pair of eyes is really important. Don’t kill anyone and take their eyes … instead, find someone who will read your work!

What songs are most played on your Ipod?
Music by Nine Inch Nails, Black Mountain, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Florence and the Machine, Royal Blood, and Silversun Pickups. I always try to pick a single song that I think would make for good “trailer” music. It helps get me in the groove for writing. For this book, it’s “Tread Lightly” by Mastodon.

Do you have critique partners or beta readers?
Yes! My former MFA classmates are usually my best friends by the time a book is ready to go. It’s so important to have a network of honest readers who can help. I also get tons of help from my partner Dagny, who goes through each book with a fine-toothed comb and is especially brutal!

What book are you reading now?
I just finished V.E. Shwab’s fantasy book A Darker Shade of Magic. Totally dug it. I’m not exactly sure what to start next. I feel like I have a couple books sitting around that need reading … but I also feel like I could just pick up a Charles Stross sci-fi novel and start reading it, too.

How did you start your writing career?
I used to sell hand-drawn comics to my parents. They’d always buy the comics. Then I would spend the money buying more art supplies. I never really made much of a profit, but I loved making comics so at least there was that.

I think the next release is going to be the sequel to The Proving! I’m almost done with it now. I just need one more fresh pair of eyes to look at it.
